While people are joining the latest social portals, these portals are mining the digital assets of their users... are you aware that everyone who registers on these portals is waiving ownership of the content posted?
What does this mean? It means that when you submit your photos, your songs, your videos and your ideas, you are giving up ownership of those assets... so that great idea that you had kept so quietly and now have formed a user group around... is lost.
By contrast, if you were to get your own Web 2.0 portal, you retain rights to your intellect property. One of the best portal platforms that has evolved during the last five years and is now running on dot net 2.0 is DotNetNuke. Having jumped from ASP.net 1.1 to 2.0, modules that used to attempt to bring people together (forums, blogs, wikis) are maturing and offering much more editing control with AJAX technology. The improved WYSIWYG editor (like MS Word) now allows for tables, images and hyperlinks which can be adjusted at any time; a simple 'right-click' of the mouse gives more options than ever before.
So, why give up your property rights to a portal that already exists when you can be in care and control of your own portal? Yes, I have 200+ friends on Facebook... but I don't have the 200 hours a week I'd need to see all of their posts.

"Susan has recounted the fantastic help you have been to OVF in an hour of very great need. We greatly value your both stepping up to the plate and getting us back on the web in a tremendously time critical fashion. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with you both, and again thank you so much for your wonderful assistance to the cause of American overseas voters. - Chip Levengood, Treasurer, Member of the Executive Board" - Overseas Vote Foundation
